Recycling and Waste News

Coronavirus

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

If you are currently self-isolating (whether you are showing symptoms, or you have been diagnosed), it is important that your waste is handled safely to reduce the risk of infecting others. Please follow these steps:

  • All contaminated waste (such as tissues and wipes) need to be securely sealed in a bag.
  • Put this bag inside another bag and tie the top securely.
  • Store the bag separately from other waste and recycling (not in communal areas) for three days, before putting it in your general waste (purple) bin as normal.

For more advice on social distancing and self-isolating, please visit Public Health England.

Service changes

Sign up for updatesWe are expecting our services to be impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak over the coming weeks. We are therefore asking all residents to follow the advice below:

  • All Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS) across North Herts are now closed until further notice due to the current COVID-19 situation. This is in line with the Government guidance about people not making unnecessary journeys. The HWRS experienced an extremely busy weekend, with long queues and people not following social distancing advice.
  • All household bulky waste collections have been suspended so we can prioritise kerbside waste and recycling collections. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. All bulky waste collections already booked will still take place.
  • Community litter picking events have been postponed in line with advice from the Government and Keep Britain Tidy. Litter picking equipment is no longer being loaned out. We apologise for any inconvenience.
  • Use all of the bins, boxes and caddies available so we can maximise the efficiency of our collections.
  • Wash and squash your recycling so you can fit more in your bin.
  • Where possible store your bins on your property to prevent others using them.
  • Let your elderly neighbours know of any service changes.

Keep up to date with the latest service information - you may be asked to put out different bins on different days. Please sign-up to our text alert service and email bulletins which will be updated with any service impacts.

Easter bin collections

Remember that your collection dates will change over Easter and the May Bank Holidays.

Please keep an eye out for a bin hanger which will be attached to your bin. Take it inside for your reference and then dispose of in your grey recycling bin, as they are made out of recyclable card.

The hangers will also include some handy tips on how to fight food waste and save money this spring.
