Consultation - How should North Hertfordshire district councillors be elected?    13 October, 2021

We want to hear your views on how you think district councillors should be elected.

To submit a response via Survey Monkey please use the link below:

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/electoralcycle

Alternatively a paper copy (available via the link below or on request) may be completed and returned either by post to the Council Offices or to this dedicated email address.

https://www.north-herts.gov.uk/latest-news

The consultation closes on 8 November and asks one specific question:

Do you think we should:

  • elect one third of our district councillors every year (‘by thirds’); or
  • elect all of our district councillors every four years (‘whole council’/’all out’)

It also ask responders to explain why they have chosen a particular option.  This will really help when Council makes a decision on whether to retain electing councillors by thirds or to move to electing councillors once every four years.

Why is this happening?

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) has started an Electoral Review of North Herts Council and this consultation feeds into that review.

The first stage of the review is for the council to produce a submission to the LGBCE on council size (i.e the number of councillors we think we need).

Prior to the submission there needs to be a decision taken on whether to retain the current electoral cycle of elections by thirds or to move to whole council elections, as this will impact on the number of councillors the authority recommends within the submission to the LGBCE.

At the Full Council meeting on 23 September Members resolved to run a public consultation on the way that district councillors are elected.

We look forward to receiving your responses.

Kind regards

Democratic Services
